Hey Phephi, really great points about social media. I've heard many major musicians talk about making a concerted effort to avoid album and concert reviews by critics to protect themselves from brutal attacks. And this is pre SM era!
Also, great phone tips, I actually didn't even know about Refocus, Opal or Brick. I've been pretty good at keeping distractions to a minimum on my phone, but like anyone, I'm sure I could do better.
Hi Sean! Thanks for reading my post. These days big artists are not just faced with album reviews but mean comments at every turn PLUS the risk of scrolling into oblivion. I barely have mean comments but the scrolling is enough to affect my creative process.
Let me know if you try any of the focus apps I mentioned! How do you currently keep distractions to a minimum?
Yeah, it's a different world for sure. I'll be 54 this Saturday, so I was around before all this existed. Navigating social media for musicians and artists is double edged sword... on one hand it's a great tool for expanding your reach, but like you said, the constant feedback and doom scrolling can be overwhelming. Creative types are sensitive creatures and even one negative comment can take the wind out of your sails. I'm glad things have been mostly positive for you. :)
I've purposely kept my phone activities very basic. Other than this new thing called Substack, I don't have any other SM on my phone and I just use it for texts and calls. Some people have calendars and all kinds of apps that they've come to depend on to run their lives and/or businesses and I never fell into that by design. So that is huge for keeping distractions to a minimum.
I do also try to be mindful of putting it away after a certain hour at night and not looking at it again until well into the next day. That way I start the day with more important things before I expose myself to potential distractions.
Okay I LOVE this and the jingle is so good! I need to try opal. Brick has been in my awareness for a while so I might get it and go for the full shabang haha. I also love how intentional you are around finding ways to minimise the scroll - so needed as a creative ♥️✨

And the jingle at the end is lovely!
